Dr. Rhodes holds a bachelor's degree in zoology from the University of Michigan and master's and doctoral degrees in physiology from Michigan State University.

Rhodes is chair of the biology department at Franklin College and the author of several science education articles that have been published in various journals. In addition, he is the recipient of numerous Franklin College awards, including the: Faculty Teaching Excellence Award, Clifford and Paula Dietz Faculty Excellence Award and Academic Adviser Award. He has been an on-campus mentor for many students during their senior internship experiences, and he recently organized a campus colloquium on evolution and intelligent design.

In his spare time, he likes to sing, play guitar, hike and play golf.
