Dr. Boardman holds three degrees from Northern Illinois University, a bachelor's in mathematics education, a master's in pure mathematics and a doctorate in mathematics. He taught at Morehead State University from 1994-97 and Hillsdale College from 1997-2003, before coming to Franklin College in August 2003.

Since completing graduate school, his interests have shifted from pure mathematics to applied mathematics and, in particular, mathematical modeling. He is the co-author of research papers in the areas of location theory in economics and comparative politics, and is currently working with a field biologist on an article about paleoecology. He has created or redeveloped mathematical modeling courses at Morehead State University, Hillsdale College and Franklin College. He enjoys conducting research projects with undergraduate mathematics majors and assisting them with presentations for mathematics conferences.
