Dr. Kevin R. Burke holds a BM in music performance (French horn) from Appalachian State University and two degrees, a MM in music history and a PhD in musicology, from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). During graduate school, he was the recipient of a Fulbright Grant for dissertation research at Ludwig-Maximilians Universität and the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich, Germany. He taught courses in music history and music research at CCM prior to arriving at Franklin College.
Dr. Burke is an active scholar in the area of early nineteenth-century German opera and his research centers on the collective reception history of German language opera in print media. He has presented papers on the criticism of operas by Louis Spohr, Carl Maria von Weber, Robert Schumann, and Wilhelm Sutor at several regional, national, and international conferences. In addition to contributions to the journals Music Research Forum and Ethnomusicology, he has also reviewed symphony concerts for the Cincinnati Post. Recently his interests have expanded to learning non-Western instruments, exploring musical narratives in film, and arranging new music for the FC student brass quartet.
At Franklin College, Dr. Burke enjoys teaching music theory, aural skills, music history, listening to music, and world music. When off campus he spends his free time cooking, running, cycling, and playing Rock Band.
