Semester At Sea

Semester at Sea, sponsored by the University of Virginia, is designed as a global semester. Students travel the globe aboard a ship and attend daily classes while at sea; their classes are much the same as they would find on a traditional campus back on land. Most Semester at Sea classes contain 20 to 30 students and the normal student course load is 12 semester hours (four courses). Port stays, which include educational activities designed to complement instruction, average four to six days and offer students a first-hand look at the societies they have studied. There are three departures per year—fall, spring, and summer—and each semester a different area of the globe is explored.
