2002 Itinerary:


 

~Madrid
     Highlights:  Royal Palace, symbol of Spain's golden Age; and El Prado, one of the world's great museums with a rich collection of Spanish and Flemish paintings (including works by Valazquez, Goya, El Greco, Rubens, and Rembrant

~Barcelona
     Highlights:  Picasso Museum; famous mountain of Montserrat; the unfinished Sagrada Falmilia, the symbol of Barcelona; Casa Batilo (the Dragon House); and sample paella or seafood at an outdoor restaurant on the waterfront
      ~Segovia
             Highlights:  2000 year old Roman aqueduct
             cathedral, turreted castle, and El Escorial
             monastery.

 
 

~Bielsa, Pamplona
     Highlights:  No bulls in January, but the spirit of Pamplona made famous by Ernest Hemingway in his 1926 novel The Sun Also Rises is alive and well in its warren of small streets near the Plaza del Castillo.  Take a break at an ornate, 1888 French-style cafe Iruna

~Toledo
     Highlights:  The Gothic Cathedral; Alcazar, battle scene during the Spanish Civil War; El Greco's famous painting, "The Burial of the Count of Orgaz" in The Church of Santo Tome.
~Cordoba, Seville, Jerez
     Highlights:  On the way...stop in La Mancha to see Don Quixote's windmills; Cordoba's La Mezquita, cathedral/mosque; Seville's Cathedral, Europe's third largest, visit the tomb of Christopher Columbus; Jerez's Royal horses.
~Granada
Highlights:  Alhambra, palace and gardens (most celebrated building in Spain); and Royal Chapel where Ferdinand and Isabella are buried.
~Alicante, Calpe, Peniscola, Valencia, Tarragona
     Highlights:  Roman ruins, including the classical amphitheater near the sea in Tarrogona

          
               ~Burgos, Bilbao
                      Highlights:  Beautiful scenery abounds in 
                the Basque Country, El Cid, subject of the
                medieval Song of My Cid and Spanish 
                national hero, is entombed in the city's
                cathedral, The Guggenheim, Bilbao.
