Chair Information
Roscoe W. Payne Chair In Philosophy and Psychology
Roscoe W. Payne was born in Franklin, Indiana in 1872 and graduated from Franklin College in 1893. The son of a physician and one of seven children, Payne graduated from Bellevue Hospital Medical College in New York in 1896. He practiced medicine in Franklin from 1896 until his death in 1930. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta and the Masonic Lodge. Payne's brother, Carl F. Payne, also graduated from Franklin College and became a physician. When he died in 1935, he left his estate in a trust fund. His widow received the income from the fund until her death, at which time the income was paid to his living siblings. When the last sibling died, the estate was transferred to Franklin College to endow the Roscoe W. Payne Chair in Philosophy and Psychology, as a memorial to his brother.
