David A. Hicks '58 Memorial Scholarship in Business and Leadership


SCHOLARSHIP BACKGROUND

David A. Hicks had a profound love for and devotion to Franklin College. He was proud of his family legacy, which includes 14 graduates of Franklin College. His great grandfather was the first to graduate in 1850 and his son, Dean A. Hicks, became a fifth-generation alumnus in 1984. His father, Ralph E. Hicks '26, was a member of the legendary "Wonder Five" basketball team. Dr. Hicks was a tireless leader and supporter of Franklin College and received an honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters, from the Institution. He served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He held a leadership role in the "Design the Future Campaign" and was Indiana chairman of the "Investing in Leaders for Life Campaign" at the time of his death in 1999. Dr. Hicks served on the Alumni Council, helped to recruit students, raise funds and organized class reunions. In 1984, he received an Alumni Citation. In 1995, Dr. Hicks retired as President and CEO of Junior Achievement of Central Indiana. During his 36 year career, he was known as "Mr. J.A." Upon his retirement it was noted that he touched the lives of more than 300,000 young people. He earned many awards locally and nationally, including the Charles R. Hook Founders' Award and the Most Outstanding Executive in the Nation Award. He was named a laureate of the Central Indiana Business Hall of Fame and is one of twelve to be inducted into the International Junior Achievement Professional Hall of Fame. He also served as chairman of the International Pioneer Organization of retired JA Professionals.

SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS

The David A. Hicks '58 Memorial Scholarship in Business and Leadership was established by the family and many friends of Dr. Hicks. The award is meant to encourage students to emulate his commitment to family, friends, faith and Franklin College. Recipients of the scholarship must be upperclass, full-time business students. The recipients will be selected based on academic excellence and leadership qualities. Preference will be given to Indiana residents.
