1. We will break into groups. Each group will be assigned one American symbol.
*
There will be about 4 students in each group. Break them into
group before going to the computers. Students should sit near
their groups when at the computers. Explain that group work means
all members working together. Talk about how the students will be
graded on their ability to work together and not fight with group
members. Explain that one person should not draw the picture, but
everyone should have a part in drawing/coloring.
2. Each group memeber should have a copy of the American Symbols questions and a pencil.
*The teacher can print these off ahead of time or let the students do it when they get to the computers.
3. By yourself, answer the questions as best as you can.
*Students should work individually. When they are done, then they can get into their groups.
4. When you are done, get together with your group and talk about your answers.
Use the computer to check your answers, then see the teacher for your poster.
*Ask the students to
compare their answers to see if they match. If someone has a
different answer, check it on the computer. Once they have all
their questions answered, they really won't need the computers anymore.
The rest of the project can take place in the classroom. If
a group requests it, they may have a picture of their symbol to make
their drawing.
5. As a group, you will draw your American symbol on the poster. You also need to talk
about what each group member is going to say when you present your symbol to the class.
*Keep reminding the
students to practice what they are going to say when they tell the
class about their symbol. Also remind them that all group members
must be incluced in the poster and presentation.
All group members must be included in making the poster and in presenting your information!
6. Click on the picture of your symbol below to get started.
*Assign the students to groups, assign them symbols, and get started!
Uncle Sam is for more advanced readers and even higher readers may need
some help understanding it. Also, within groups, I would put more
advanced readers and lower readers and encourage group members to help
each other. If one student cannot find the answer, don't just
tell him, help him find it on the computer. My students have done
group work and are used to helping each other in this way, but still
need to be encouraged at times.
