  • The mission of the Truman Scholarship Foundation is:
    • to find and recognize college juniors with exceptional leadership potential who are committed to careers in government, the nonprofit or advocacy sectors, education or elsewhere in the public service; and
    • to provide them with financial support for graduate study, leadership training, and fellowship with other students who are committed to making a difference through public service.
  • Each year, the Foundation reviews over 600 applications for our 60 to 65 Scholarships awarded annually
Eligibility: 
  • Must be nominated by Franklin College
  • LEGAL REQUIREMENTS (must be met):
    • Must be a full-time student pursuing a bachelor's degree with junior-level academic standing; be senior-level standing in the third year of college enrollment; or be a senior and a resident of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, or a Pacific Island.
    • Be a U.S. citizen (or a U.S. national from a Pacific Island) or expect to receive your citizenship by the date the Scholarship will be awarded.
  • CAREER AND GRADUATE STUDY INTERESTS
    • You hope to be a "change agent," in time, improving the ways that government agencies, nonprofit organizations, or educational institutions serve the public.
    • There are conditions in our society or the environment which trouble me.
    • You want to work in government, education, the nonprofit sector, or the public interest/advocacy sector to improve these conditions.
    • You are comfortable committing to work in public service for three of the first seven years after you complete a Foundation-funded graduate degree.
    • You would like to get a master's degree, a doctorate, or a professional degree such as a law degree or a Master of Public Administration, Master of Public Health, Master of Social Work, Master of Education, Master of Public Policy, or Master of International Affairs.
  • COMMUNITY SERVICE AND ACADEMIC RECORD
    • You have participated extensively in two or more of the following sets of activities:
      • Student government and/or campus-based extracurricular activities;
      • Community service-related activities that were not organized by your school or by your fraternity/sorority;
      • Government internships, commissions or boards, advocacy or interest groups, nonpartisan political activities, or military/ROTC ;
      • Partisan political activities and campaigns.
    • You have been involved with organizations or activities related to your career interests.
    • You have demonstrated some of your leadership potential.
    • You have sufficiently strong grades and coursework to gain admittance to a first-rate graduate institution.
    • You read regularly a good national newspaper and a thoughtful periodical.
    • You have had one or more courses relating to your career interests.
  • GENERAL
    • You would appreciate external affirmation of your values and goals.
    • You would like to become associated with Truman Scholar "change agents."
    • You are capable of analyzing a public issue in your intended career area and presenting your findings in a one-page memo to a government official who could take action.
    • You are willing to prepare an outstanding application and policy proposal under the supervision of your Truman Faculty Representative.
    • You believe you could hold your own in a challenging interview conducted by a panel of prominent public servants, educators, and former Truman Scholars.
    • You  could use $30,000 to continue your education. 
Award Potential: 
  • Up to $30,000 in funding to students pursuing graduate degrees in public service fields.
  • Students must be college juniors at the time of selection.

  • Campus Deadline: Please submit all required application deadline to the campus representative by 5pm on November 14, 2012. 
  • Application Deadline: February 7, 2013 by 11:59 pm Tuesday, your time zone.
Application Process: 
  • All applications must be submitted online.
  • The Foundation will not accept printed materials.
Application Materials: 
  • Nomination form and letter from the faculty representative
  • Application
  • Policy proposal (proposals focused on national issues tend to be viewed more favorably)
  • Transcripts (committee will look at grades for fall of junior year, an ambitious curriculum, courses in Political Science, Government, American History and Public Policy, and one or more courses related to career objective)
  • Three letters of recommendation
