Dean J. Abplanalp
Dean became a board member in 2008; he serves on the physical facilities, finance and investment committees. Dean is a graduate of Broward Community College and Ball State University, where he earned a degree in finance. Prior to joining Raymond James & Associates in December 2008 as Senior Vice President, Investments, Dean spent 26 years as an investment adviser and branch manager for A.G. Edwards and Sons, Inc. in Indianapolis. Dean is a lifelong resident of Franklin, Ind.
Devin Anderson
Devin became a board member in 2011. He holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Franklin College. He is president of Indiana-based E&A Industries and president and CEO of Colorado-based Udi's Gluten Free Foods. In addition, he has day to day oversight of E&A's portfolio companies, along with acquisition responsibilities. Prior to joining E&A Industries in 1997, Devin served in several political campaign leadership positions, including chief of staff to Indiana Congressman David McIntosh, U.S. Sen. Dan Coats and the Republican Party. Devin formerly served on the regional board of Ivy Tech Community College and is a member of the Young Presidents' Organization. His civic involvement includes advocating children's legal interests in the court system. In his spare time, he enjoys tennis. Devin is a resident of Carmel, Ind.
John W. Auld Jr.
John became a board member in 2003; he chairs the enrollment management committee and serves on the honorary degrees, development/public affairs, audit, investment and President’s committees. He holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Franklin College. John is president of Franklin Insurance Agency, which markets personal and commercial insurance products. He has been active in many community health initiatives and is currently serving as chairman of Partnership for a Healthier Johnson County and president of the Johnson County Health Foundation. John has served Franklin College as a past member of the Alumni Council, and he received an Alumni Citation in 1996 for his professional accomplishments. In 2009, John received a Distinguished Hoosier Award from Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels. John is a resident of Franklin, Ind.
V. Von Boll
Von became a board member in 1979; he chairs the board’s development/public affairs committee and serves on the enrollment management and President’s committees. His early glimpses of Franklin College coincided with visits to see his uncle, Homer Kent, a dean who taught religion and philosophy at Franklin for more than 50 years. Von holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Franklin College. He began his career in business with the finance department of Indiana-based Cummins Engine Co., and in the 20 years that followed he advanced through the ranks to service manager, purchasing director and assistant vice president. In 1971, Von purchased Cummins’ Michigan distributorship, which he successfully operated for 30 years before retiring as chairman and chief executive officer in 2001, when his son assumed ownership. Franklin College awarded Von an Alumni Citation in 1983 and an honorary doctorate in recognition of his professional accomplishments in 2003. His numerous contributions to the college include the Von Boll Welcome Center and the Press Box. Von is a resident of Boca Raton, Fla.
William R. Brown
Bill became a board member in 1998; he chairs the President’s committee and serves on the trusteeship, honorary degrees, academic affairs and development/public affairs committees.
He holds a math degree from Franklin College and a law degree from Indiana University. After military service with the U.S. Navy, he built a career with American United Life Insurance Co. and its holding company OneAmerica Financial Partners, Inc., from which he retired as general counsel and corporate secretary. Bill is a resident of Indianapolis.
Peter T. Cangany Jr.
Pete became a board member in 2008; he chairs the Audit Committee and serves on the finance and physical facilities committees. He holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting and economics from Franklin College. He is a CPA and partner with Ernst & Young LLP, where he has worked since 1980. Pete is involved extensively with the Junior Achievement organization and the San Antonio Sports Foundation. Pete is a resident of San Antonio, Texas.
John M. Chiarotti
John became a board member in 2011; he serves on the finance and investment committees and is vice chairman of the development and public affairs committee. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Franklin College and a master’s degree in economics/business from Indiana State University.
John retired as president of Amos-Hill Associates in Edinburgh, Ind., in 2007. Since 1987, he has served as vice president and treasurer for the Elba L. and Gene Portteus Branigin Foundation and, since 2004, has served on the Johnson County Community Foundation Investment Committee. John has served Franklin College as a former economics instructor, vice president of financial affairs and assistant football, track and field and tennis coach. He also served on the Faught Stadium Campaign Committee and the Alumni Council. He has been a member of the Franklin College Athletic Hall of Fame since 1993 and, in 2009, was recipient of the Alumni Citation for Lifetime Achievement. He is a founding member and treasurer of the Touchdown Club. He is a resident of Franklin, Ind.
Mary Ann Collier
Mary Ann became a board member in 2001; she chairs the student affairs committee and serves on the academic affairs, trusteeship and investment committees. She holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Lindenwood College, a master’s degree in mathematics and education from Indiana University and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Notre Dame, where she spent part of her time studying at the London School of Economics. In addition, Mary Ann has attended the Harvard Program for Management Development and the Sloan Institute for Finance. Her career experience includes four years at Franklin College, where she was a member of the Student Affairs Division and an instructor in math. She later served 23 years with AT&T, where she retired as a vice president and was nominated for the Catherine B. Cleary “Woman of the Year” Award, named after the first woman to serve on AT&T’s board. She went on to teach at San Francisco State University in the schools of engineering and business. Since fall 2005, she has been employed with Cisco Systems, where she is currently a senior director. Franklin College made Mary Ann an Associate Alumna in 2005. Mary Ann is a resident of San Francisco, Calif.
Deborah Hill Davis
Debbie became a board member in 2007; she serves on the academic affairs and development/public relations committees. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Franklin College and a master’s degree in public relations from Ball State University. In 2007, she founded Triad Public Relations Inc., after working in different aspects of the healthcare industry, including positions with Columbia/HCA, Clarian Health, Community Health Network, Eli Lilly and Co. and WellPoint, Inc. Prior to that, she was an award-winning TV news producer in Cincinnati, Minneapolis and Louisville. She serves as the Franklin College Alumni Council representative to the board of trustees. Debbie is a resident of Fishers, Ind.
Robert A. DeVoss
Bob became a board member in 2007; he serves on the trusteeship, enrollment management and development/public affairs committees. He holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and history from Franklin College and a master’s degree in education from Butler University (Indianapolis). He was the president and an owner of Retirement Management, Inc., prior to its sale in 2008. He and his business partner focused on the development of “neighborhood” retirement communities in Indiana and subsequently built and operated eight communities in the state. In addition to serving as a trustee, Bob serves on the Franklin College Alumni Council. He also was official ambassador and coordinator of the 2009 Colts mini-camp at the college. Bob is a resident of Carmel, Ind.
Susan Johnson DeVoss
Susan became a board member in 1997 and assumed the role of chair in 2008. She is the fourth generation of her family to be involved with the leadership of Franklin College. Susan holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Franklin. She built a more than 25-year career in human resources management with The Chase Manhattan Bank in New York, including five years as human resources executive of the Asia-Pacific area, during which she resided in Hong Kong. Susan retired from Chase in 1997. In 1973, the college presented her with an Alumni Citation in recognition of her professional accomplishments. Susan is a resident of Fort Wayne, Ind.
John R. Dickerson
John became a board member in 2009; he serves on the development/public affairs and academic affairs committees. John holds a bachelor's degree in English and journalism from Franklin College and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Indianapolis. He is a director for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, where he has worked since 1987. In this role, John oversees the efforts of 300 employees who are responsible for the security of all the U.S. borders and border facilities. In addition to serving as a trustee, John serves on the Franklin College Alumni Council. John is a resident of Indianapolis.
Clifford H. Dietz
Cliff became a board member in 1978; he serves on the trusteeship, enrollment management and development/public affairs committees. Cliff’s professional background includes founding Engineered Models Corp. in 1948. Cliff grew the business into one of the nation’s premier precision-parts companies and earned “company of the year” accolades from the U.S. Department of Defense. Cliff and his family have been an integral part of Franklin College for more than three decades. Their numerous contributions include the Dietz Center for Professional Development, Dietz Residence Hall and McDowell baseball field, which is named in memory of their grandson. In appreciation of their loyal and generous support, Franklin College named both Cliff and his wife, Paula, Associate Alumni in 1984. Two years later, the college awarded Cliff an honorary doctorate of humane letters in recognition of his professional and civic achievements. Cliff is a resident of Franklin, Ind.
James V. Due
Jim became a board member in 2003; he chairs the finance committee and serves on the development/public affairs, investment and President’s committees. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business from Franklin College and a master’s degree in business administration from Butler University (Indianapolis). James is a senior vice president and division manager for the healthcare and tax-exempt financing team at The Northern Trust Co. in Chicago. The company serves healthcare systems, universities and foundations throughout the United States. Jim is a resident of Chicago.
Margot Lacy Eccles
Margot became a board member in 1993; she chairs the enrollment management committee and serves on the physical facilities committee. Margot is the second generation in her family to be involved with the leadership of Franklin College. She attended Tufts University, completed advanced studies at the University of Paris and graduated from the American Theatre Wing of New York City. She is vice president of LDI, Ltd., a company that’s been owned by her family since 1912. She directs community and shareholder relations for LDI and is a member of the company’s board of directors. In 1976, Margot helped develop the Stanley K. Lacy Executive Leadership Series for young professionals. The program raises awareness of community issues and promotes a sense of community stewardship through seminars, tours, reading, and interaction with experts, leaders and decision-makers. She also created and sponsors the annual "Young Playwrights in Process" program to encourage children to write plays. She is an enthusiastic patron of the arts and has served on numerous boards throughout central Indiana. In 1996, Franklin College named Margot an Associate Alumna and in 2002 awarded her an honorary doctorate of humane letters in recognition of her civic contributions. Her numerous contributions to the college include Théâtre Margot. She is a resident of Indianapolis.
Christine S. Fields
Christi became a board member in 2002; she chairs the trusteeship committee and serves on the President’s Committee. Previously, she chaired the audit committee. She holds a Franklin College bachelor’s degree in physical education and a law degree from Indiana University. Christi recently retired as the vice president and general counsel of Eli Lilly and Co.’s International Operations. During her 15-year career with Lilly, she resided for three years in London, supporting the Intercontinental Legal Operations. She also resided six years in Seattle, supporting Lilly’s prior Physio-Control Medical Device Operations. She is a resident of Indianapolis.
James M. Frische
Jim became a board member in 2000; he serves on the academic affairs and physical facilities committees. He holds bachelor’s, master’s and honorary doctoral degrees in industrial engineering from Purdue University. Jim also has a master’s degree in business administration from Butler University. Jim served in the Army as a lieutenant with the First Cavalry Division in Vietnam. He went on to build a nearly 40-year career in the music industry, beginning with the RCA Record Division in Indianapolis and then moving to Sony Corp. in Terre Haute, Ind. He was Sony’s first employee at a new corporation established to introduce CD technology in 1983, and he later became chairman and CEO with responsibility for all software manufacturing in the western hemisphere. He retired in 2003. He is a resident of Trafalgar, Ind.
Mark J. Harrison
Mark became a board member in 2011; he serves on the enrollment management and physical facilities committees. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Franklin College. Mark is president and general manager of Ed Martin Automotive Group, the umbrella organization for all Ed Martin dealerships. Under his leadership, the company has earned the GMC 5-Star Dealer award, the Master Dealer award and the Oldsmobile Elite Dealer award. The company also has supported the community through contributions to Junior Achievement and a scholarship at Lawrence Township Schools for students interested in pursuing mechanics. Mark is a former Franklin College athlete, having been a member of the football team. He’s currently a member of the Touchdown Club. He enjoys golfing, boating, traveling and auto racing in his spare time. Mark is a resident of Indianapolis.
Pam Herring Hicks
Pam became a board member in 2000; she serves on the enrollment management and student affairs committees. Her career experience includes working as an administrative assistant, legal secretary and owner of two small businesses as well as an editor of a national and state magazine. She is a committed patron and advocate for the arts, currently serving with the Indiana Arts Commission, Alliance of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, President's Roundtable, Women's Committee of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, South Group of the ISO, Greater Greenwood Arts Council, IUPUI Library Board and Little Red Door Circle of Friends. Pam also is curator of the Franklin College art collection. Her husband, the late David A. Hicks, class of l958, was a past chairman of the Franklin College Board of Trustees. Fourteen members of the Hicks family dating back to 1850 have graduated from Franklin. Franklin College awarded Pam an Alumni Citation in 1991 for her civic contributions. Pam is a resident of Greenwood, Ind.
Worthe S. Holt Jr.
Worthe became a board member in 2008; he serves on the physical facilities, academic affairs and audit committees. He holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry from Indiana University and a medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. Worthe earned his master’s degree in medical management from Tulane University. He currently serves as vice president and chief medical officer for Humana businesses in Indiana, Kansas and Missouri. Previously, Worthe served as executive vice president and chief operating officer for St. Vincent Health; prior to that he served in the same roles with St. Francis Hospital and Health Centers. Worthe also is a fighter pilot and flight surgeon in the Indiana Air National Guard as well as commander of the 181st Medical Group, holding the rank of colonel. Worthe is a resident of Fishers, Ind.
James E. Hoover
Jim became a board member in 1998; he serves on the finance, student affairs, audit and investment committees. He is the second generation in his family to be involved with the leadership of Franklin College. He holds a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical and industrial engineering from Purdue University. He built a long career with Eli Lilly and Co., where he worked in the manufacturing support and systems areas. He also oversaw a Lilly manufacturing plant in England for five years. He currently is president of the Hoover Family Foundation. In 2007, Franklin College named Jim an associate alumnus in recognition of his longtime loyal and generous support. He is a resident of Indianapolis.
Stephen L. Huddleston
Steve became a board member in 1992 and retired as board chair in 2008; he serves on the finance, development/public affairs, audit and President’s committees. He holds a bachelor’s of science degree from Indiana University and a doctorate of law from Indiana University Law School. He is an attorney and has been practicing law in Franklin, Ind., since 1974; he serves as general counsel for the college. Franklin College named Steve an Associate Alumnus in 1997 and awarded him an honorary doctorate of laws in 2006. He has been an adjunct professor of business law since 1974. He is a resident of Franklin, Ind.
James Napolitan
Jim became a board member in 1997; he chairs the investment committee and serves on the finance, physical facilities, audit and President’s committees. He holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Harvard College and a doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Initially, Jim made a career in clinical psychology, working with programs that served people with developmental disabilities. He later made a second career in the stock market, working as a trader on the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. In 2004, Franklin College named Jim an Associate Alumnus in recognition of his longtime loyal and generous support. Jim’s wife, Sandra Mock Napolitan, class of ’60, is the eighth of 15 members in her family to attend Franklin over the last 100-plus years. Among Jim and Sandra’s numerous contributions to Franklin College are the Napolitan Student Center and the Napolitan Alumni House. Jim is a resident of Chicago.
Wil B. Nelp
Wil became a board member in 1999; he serves on the student affairs, finance and President’s committees. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Franklin College in English and a medical degree from Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, Md.). His post-doctoral training at Hopkins was in internal medicine followed by a fellowship in nuclear medicine. He later was recruited to Seattle to join the University of Washington medical faculty to help establish the first nuclear medicine academic department. Wil has been nationally recognized for his teaching and research and has trained many clinical and academic physicians. He continues to work part time as a professor emeritus. He received an honorary doctorate of science from Franklin College in 1967 in recognition of his career accomplishments and an Alumni Citation in 1991. Wil, a former football player and golfer, is a member of the Franklin College Athletic Hall of Fame. He is a resident of Seattle.
Michael W. O'Dell
Michael became a board member in 2009; he serves on the academic affairs and student affairs committees. Michael holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Franklin College and a medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. He currently serves as chief of clinical services in the department of rehabilitation medicine at New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan. He also holds the academic appointments of professor of clinical rehabilitation medicine at the Weill Cornell Medical College and adjunct professor of Clinical Rehabilitation Medicine at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Michael is nationally recognized as a clinician and educator in neurological rehabilitation, especially traumatic brain injury and stroke. He lectures frequently, both nationally and internationally. In 1985 and 1998, Michael received the Franklin College Admissions Office Recruitment Award for his outstanding assistance in making student referrals. He is a resident of New York.
Philip L. Powell
Phil became a board member in 1983; he chairs the physical facilities committee and serves on the finance committee. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business from Franklin College. Phil is the owner of Allied Technologies Food Equipment, Inc., a company he created in 1980. He has 33 years of experience in the food service industry and has received numerous sales awards throughout his career. He also serves on several manufacturers’ representative councils. Phil, a former Grizzlies’ quarterback, is a member of the Franklin College Athletic Hall of Fame and the recipient of a 1993 Athletic Achievement Award. Phil chairs the annual Hugh K. Andrews Memorial Golf Outing to raise funds for the college athletic department. He is a resident of Greenwood, Ind.
Bill Receveur
Bill became a board member in 2000; he serves on the trusteeship, enrollment management and investment committees. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and business from Franklin College. Bill is the founder and president of Realm Construction Co., Inc., a commercial and industrial general construction and construction management firm. The company’s customers include the Jewish Hospital St. Mary’s Healthcare System, Brown Forman Corp. and General Electric Co. In 2001, Bill received the Franklin College Admissions Office Recruitment Award for his outstanding assistance in making student referrals. Bill is a resident of Louisville, Ky.
Jane (Burns) Hoffmeister Repp
Jane became a board member in 1992; she serves on the finance, student affairs and investment committees. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English and history with a minor in secondary education from Franklin College. After college, Jane taught English at the high school level for two years; she later owned a classical ballet school for 20 years. Jane also has made a career of volunteering and serving on boards to support the arts, education, social service to the homeless and community and hospital foundations. Jane received a Franklin College Alumni Citation in 2002. In 1997, Jane received the Franklin College Admissions Office Recruitment Award for her outstanding assistance in making student referrals. She is a resident of Naples, Fla.
Rafael S. Sánchez, Jr.
Rafael became a board member in 2001; he serves on the student affairs committee. He holds a Franklin College bachelor’s degree in three majors: journalism, political science and Spanish. Since 1998, he has worked for ABC’s Indianapolis TV affiliate WRTV-6, where he is a consumer/investigative reporter. He previously worked for TV stations in Arizona and Texas. He has received numerous Emmy nominations and two Best Consumer Reporting Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists. Rafael is a resident of Franklin, Ind.
Robert D. Schafstall
Rob became a board member in 1994; he serves as treasurer. Rob also serves on the development/public affairs, finance and investment committees. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Franklin College and a law degree from Indiana University School of Law (Indianapolis). He is a practicing attorney and has served as a Franklin city judge since 1972. Rob has for many years volunteered as a timekeeper for the Franklin College men’s basketball team. Franklin College awarded Rob an Alumni Citation in 1991. He is a resident of Franklin, Ind.
Dan King Thomasson
Dan became a board member in 1990; he serves on the development/public affairs, enrollment management and trusteeship committees. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and completed graduate work at Colorado University. He is a former vice president of news for the E. W. Scripps Co., (Scripps Howard Newspapers) and has worked and lived in Washington, D.C., for 46 years. His experience includes a stint as White House correspondent and chief congressional correspondent before managing Scripps Howard News Service and the company's international operations. Along the way he covered three national presidential campaigns, Chappaquiddick, Watergate and a dozen other scandals as chief investigative correspondent. He is a member of the Indiana and Washington journalism halls of fame. He still writes two columns a week syndicated by Scripps. In recognition of his career accomplishments, Franklin College named Dan an Associate Alumnus in 1989. He is a great-great-great grandson of George King, the founder of Franklin, the town, and a founder of Franklin College. Dan is a resident of Fairfax, Va.
Douglas L. Tillman
Doug became a board member in 1991; he serves on the academic affairs, development/public affairs and President’s committees. He holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and economics from Franklin College and a law degree from Indiana University School of Law (Indianapolis). He built a nearly 33-year career with Eli Lilly and Co., before retiring as associate general counsel. He remains active through volunteerism, having served or currently serving on numerous boards in support of education, arts and cultural organizations. Franklin College awarded Doug an Alumni Citation in 1996. He is a resident of Indianapolis.
R. Martin Umbarger
Marty became a board member in 2006; he serves on the academic affairs and student affairs committees. He holds a bachelor's degree in business from the University of Evansville and is a graduate of the U.S. Army War College. He was appointed the adjutant general of the Indiana National Guard in 2004. His primary focus is to lead the Indiana Army and Air National Guard. Marty began his career as an enlisted soldier for the Indiana Army National Guard in 1969. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, Infantry Branch, in June 1971, after graduating from the Indiana Military Academy. Prior to his current assignment, he served as deputy commanding general (reserve component) for the U.S. Forces Command. He also served as commanding general of the 76th Infantry Brigade (Separate). He is currently a principal member of the Army Reserve Forces Policy Committee. Marty is a resident of Bargersville, Ind.
Constance Richardson Van Valer
Connie became a board member in 1999; she co-chairs the honorary degrees committee and serves on the student affairs and the academic affairs committees. As the daughter of Franklin College’s 10th president, Connie has been closely associated with her alma mater since age 12. She holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry from Franklin College and pharmacology and medical degrees from Indiana University. She completed post graduate studies at Methodist and St. Vincent hospitals in Indianapolis and specialized in emergency medicine until her retirement in 2005. In 2008, Connie and her family made a major gift that funded renovations to the Franklin College Chapel, which was rededicated in memory of her father, former college president Harold W. Richardson. Connie is a resident of Greenwood, Ind.
Susan Williams
Susan became a board member in 2005; she serves as secretary. She serves on the enrollment management and physical facilities committees. She holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Franklin College and a master’s degree in social studies education from Indiana University. Susan is president of Indiana Sports Corp., a not-for-profit organization that attracts major sporting events to central Indiana. She also serves as the director of Arts Council of Indianapolis, 2012 Super Bowl Host and the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission. Susan previously had a long political career in Indianapolis and Marion County with the City-County Council, and she was awarded a Sagamore of the Wabash for her distinguished service to the state. Franklin College awarded Susan an Alumni Citation for her professional accomplishments in 2002. She is a resident of Indianapolis.
Theressa J. Wright
Theressa became a board member in 1998; she chairs the academic affairs committee and serves on the trusteeship and student affairs committees. She holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Franklin College, a master’s degree in chemistry from Butler University (Indianapolis) and a medical degree from Indiana University. She completed a fellowship in cardiology at the University of Iowa. Before becoming a physician, Theressa was a medical technologist for both Methodist and St. Francis hospitals as well as a research chemist for Boehringer Mannheim Diagnostics (now Roche). Theressa joined Eli Lilly and Co. in 1995 and currently is the senior medical director for Early Phase Medicine, Global Patient Safety and Lilly Research Laboratories. Theressa also is a founder and board member of two K-8 charter schools, Imagine Indiana Life Sciences Academy East (opened 2008) and West (opened 2009). Franklin College presented Theressa with an Alumni Citation in 2008 in recognition of her civic and professional accomplishments. Theressa is a resident of Indianapolis.
